Excursion in Sierra Nevada, Los Cahorros (Granada)

, , ,

A short drive southeast of Granada, not far from the village of Monachil, the area known as Los Cahorros is good for short walks, with trails running through the dramatic gorges that guard the Río Monachil. The  route, heading upstream – passes over a suspension bridge and alongside waterfalls.   The impressive Los Cahorros gorge is situated 2 kilometres from the  village centre of Monachil. Until very recently, the gorge was only really known and appreciated in rock climbing circles, the steep limestone cliffs offering numerous routes for climbers. … This route, exceptionally beautiful, is in particular suitable for families. Unbeatable views, waterfalls, plenty of rock pools for swimming, narrow caves and tunnels that you have to crawl through or hang off the rock face, walking alongside acequias that date back to Moorish times and, of course, the famous hanging bridges.

The hike takes you through some spectacular Andalucian countryside …

Cahorros, Sierra Nevada (Granada) 11 Km

It is a bit more than a half hour drive, and then we start walking in a cultivated area of fruit trees, such us quince, pomegranate, fig, olive or almond trees. We will soon reach the famous suspension bridge of Los Cahorros, which was built ninety years ago with ropes and wood and later rebuilt with metallic materials. It is, approximately, 55 metres long and it moves as you walk on it. Now we continue walking along the river Monachil, a beautiful gorge, sometimes it is a bit difficult to walk straight on as the rocks are hanging over the path…here it is an advantage to be a kid! We will pass through a natural tunnel, “la Cueva de las Palomas”, and continuing walking along the river which we cross to have a picnic with fresh mountain water. On the way back as we are climbing we have great views over the Cahorros gorge and even on to Granada. The downhill is short but a bit steep; it will lead us to two old threshing floors known as Los Renegrales. From here it is great to see the rock climbers trying to dominate the vertical walls.
